Bridging Futures: Highlights from the 4th Datuk Sebastian Education, Career & Entrepreneurship Fair 2025

Date: 25–27 April 2025
Venue: Pullman Miri Grand Ballroom, Level 6
Time: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

A Weekend of Opportunities, Connections & Career Growth

The 4th Datuk Sebastian Education, Career & Entrepreneurship Fair 2025 returned to Miri with a strong mix of employers, institutions, and aspiring talents from across Sarawak. Held at the prestigious Pullman Miri Grand Ballroom from 25–27 April 2025, the event was a three-day convergence of education, recruitment, and entrepreneurial showcases designed to connect job seekers and students with real opportunities and insights into Malaysia’s evolving career landscape.

Organized by the Miri Education Initiative Society (MEIS) and SUPP Youth (Piasau Branch) in collaboration with PERKESO Sarawak, the event aimed to build a strong bridge between education, careers, and entrepreneurial opportunities for the people of Miri and the surrounding region.

Day 1: Friday, 25 April – An Energetic Kickoff Amidst a Modest Crowd

The carnival officially opened its doors on Friday morning, buzzing with early visitors keen on exploring new career and education pathways. Although the main opening ceremony was reserved for Sunday this year (a shift from last year’s Friday launch), excitement was still palpable in the halls.

Special visits by Datuk Sebastian Ting and Councillor Leslie Lau set the tone early. Both leaders made their rounds across the exhibitor booths, including Ultech Engineering, presenting Certificates of Participation and engaging in thoughtful discussions about local industry needs, opportunities for youth, and the importance of events like these.

Understanding the Job Application Process at the Fair

For those attending the fair, the job application process was made seamless through collaboration with MyFutureJobs and PERKESO.

Jobseekers began by visiting the Job Listing Board displayed at the entrance of the hall, where they could browse all available job openings across participating companies, including Ultech Engineering.

Once they identified positions of interest, applicants logged into the MyFutureJobs website using their username credentials to formally submit their applications online.

Following submission, PERKESO processed and screened the applications. Successful matches were then directed to face-to-face interview sessions with individual companies at the fair itself — streamlining the process and giving candidates immediate opportunities to meet employers directly.

This system made the career fair not just an information-sharing platform, but a real, active job marketplace.

Ultech Engineering’s Participation

As a locally-rooted engineering services provider based in Miri, Ultech Engineering participated actively on Friday (25 April) and Saturday (26 April). We opened applications for the following roles:

  • Automation & Control Engineers
  • Electrical Engineers
  • QA/QC Engineer
  • Wireman (Cable Laying)
  • Procurement Purchaser
  • Document Controller
  • Storekeeper
  • Billing Administrator (newly added)

Jobseekers were welcomed to drop off their resumes directly at our booth and were briefed on our projects, career development opportunities, and work culture.

Despite a slightly lower turnout compared to the previous year, there was a solid stream of interested candidates—many of whom had clear technical backgrounds and showed genuine enthusiasm to work in the engineering sector. This year’s shift of the official ceremony to Sunday may have contributed to the lighter traffic on Friday, but our team still managed to conduct fruitful conversations and received over 60 online applications (before their scheduled walk-in).

Day 2: Saturday, 26 April – Career Fair Peak Energy and Active Engagements

Saturday was undoubtedly the liveliest day of the carnival. The Pullman Grand Ballroom buzzed with crowds — students, jobseekers, parents, and curious visitors filled the space, creating a lively and exciting atmosphere.

Ultech’s Day 2 Highlights

Ultech Engineering’s booth remained lively throughout the day. Candidates dropped off resumes, asked thoughtful questions about career growth in engineering services, and explored the available roles. Many visitors showed genuine excitement, particularly but this year, more candidates were interested in the administrative openings such as Document Controller and Billing Administrator and some warm reception for the Wireman (Cable Laying) and Storekeeper positions.

  • Education partners provided guidance on scholarships and academic pathways.
  • Career fair exhibitors conducted resume clinics and walk-in interviews.
  • Entrepreneurship booths inspired many to think about starting their own ventures.

Beyond Ultech’s booth, the atmosphere was vibrant:

Elsewhere in the hall, various companies from construction, hospitality, finance, oil & gas, and tech sectors offered diverse job openings—from sales and service technicians to offshore engineers, restaurant staff, and creative roles like videographers and developers.

Education providers such as SEGi College, ICATS, and Curtin Malaysia engaged the younger audience with program brochures, free counselling, and study pathway talks.

By the end of Day 2, Ultech Engineering proudly recorded one of the highest statistics among participating companies, receiving 27 job applications and conducting multiple walk-in interviews.

Update as of Monday, 28 April, we are thrilled to share that one Wireman position has already been successfully filled from the applicants we met during the carnival.

This outcome reflects both the talent available locally and Ultech’s growing reputation as a trusted employer in Miri.

Interactive Quiz + Ultech Merch Giveaway: Making It Meaningful

At the heart of Ultech Engineering’s booth experience was a simple but thoughtful initiative — a career quiz giveaway designed especially for walk-in applicants who sat for interviews with us.

As part of our employer branding strategy and community engagement, we launched our freshly produced Ultech-branded merchandise at the event — a batch that had just arrived from the factory in time for the fair. 🎁✨

To receive the exclusive gift, applicants were invited to participate in a short quiz focused on the role they had applied for. This quiz served two purposes:

  1. To educate participants — especially fresh graduates — about the scope, responsibilities, and expectations of each job.
  2. To understand their career preferences and readiness, so we could better match them to suitable positions and guide them with clarity.

The initiative turned out to be a fun and informative moment at our booth — sparking deeper conversations, offering candidates better role clarity, and adding a personal touch to the interview process.

As a gesture of appreciation, we also prepared exclusive Ultech gift packages for Datuk Sebastian Ting, Councillor Leslie Lau, and our supporting partner PERKESO Sarawak — in recognition of their ongoing commitment to youth development, career growth, and community empowerment in Miri.

A Taste of Hospitality

Adding to the vibrant event atmosphere, Indocafé set up a coffee truck right at the hotel lobby, offering free hot coffee to participants throughout the career fair days — a much-appreciated treat that kept everyone energized! ☕✨

Meanwhile, Pullman Hotel also joined the fun by selling convenient and delicious food outside the hall — including chicken rice, croissant sandwiches, popcorn, and cotton candy. It was a thoughtful touch that kept both jobseekers and exhibitors fueled throughout the long days, and many attendees commented how much they appreciated having easy access to snacks and meals without leaving the venue.

Day 3: Sunday, 27 April – Datuk Sebastian's Education and Career Fair Official Ceremony, A Celebration of Education and Entrepreneurship Opportunities, Support & Sustainability

Sunday marked the official opening ceremony of the education and career fair, complete with cultural performances, keynote speeches, and formal acknowledgements by the event organizers—Miri Education Initiative Society (MEIS), Sarawak United Peoples' Party (SUPP) Youth Miri, and key event partners such as PERKESO Sarawak and Sarawak Skills.

Notably, many participating companies—including Ultech Engineering—did not take part on Sunday, as some recruitment activities had wrapped up during the more active Friday and Saturday sessions. This was a strategic decision as traffic was expected to lean more towards formal and ceremonial proceedings rather than job-seeking engagements.

While the event still drew general public interest, many industry booths were either vacated or scaled down, confirming the trend that the most meaningful recruitment interactions occurred on Days 1 and 2.

Sunday, 27 April, was not just about ceremonial proceedings — it was a full day of impactful initiatives:

  • The official opening ceremony was graced by key dignitaries and community leaders.
  • Scholarships and education assistance were awarded to deserving students, providing crucial support for academic advancement.
  • Entrepreneurship grants were announced, aimed at helping young entrepreneurs and small business owners kickstart or grow their ventures.
  • Green and sustainable initiatives were introduced, aligning Sarawak’s development goals with environmental consciousness.
  • Financial assistance programs for home purchases were also highlighted, offering a pathway to homeownership for the younger generation.

This information-sharing day made it clear: the carnival wasn’t just about jobs and studies—it was about building a holistic, sustainable future for the community.

Overall Observations of the 4th Datuk Sebastian Education, Career & Entrepreneurship Carnival 2025

Reduced Day 1 Traffic: The relocation of the official ceremony from Friday (as in previous years) to Sunday affected the early momentum. However, those who attended Friday were more focused and intent on job-hunting, providing quality interactions.

Saturday Surge: Saturday proved to be the strongest day in terms of turnout, conversation quality, and applicant enthusiasm.

Diverse Employer Participation: From Ultech Engineering to major names like OM Materials, Sealink, and Bateriku, the diversity of job openings catered to a wide range of skillsets—from professional roles to entry-level and blue-collar positions.

Youth Engagement: The presence of academic partners and institutions attracted students and graduates, creating a holistic environment for both career and educational discovery.

Reflections from Ultech Engineering: Productive Engagement at the Career Fair with the Public Community

At Ultech Engineering, our participation reaffirmed our commitment to growing with the local talent pool. We were thrilled to engage with so many bright individuals, even amidst the challenges posed by changes in event scheduling and turnout patterns.

Receiving our Participation Certificate directly from Datuk Sebastian Ting was an honor, and the conversations we had with him and Councillor Leslie Lau further cemented the importance of collaboration between industries and community initiatives.

The fair served as a timely reminder that while technical skills are critical, building strong communities also requires supporting education, entrepreneurship, environmental responsibility, and financial stability.

Looking Forward for Sarawak's Talent and Workforce

As industries continue to evolve and the push towards innovation and sustainability grows stronger, Ultech Engineering remains committed to discovering, nurturing, and growing local talent.

Events like the Datuk Sebastian Education, Career & Entrepreneurship Fair 2025 prove that collaboration between education, industry, and government creates powerful momentum for the next generation.
