Ultech Engineering's Successful Basic PLC Workshop with Siemens SIMATIC S7-1200 Controller for Curtin Students and IEEE Club
Nur Izazi Aliah, May 14, 2024
SIMATIC S7-1200

Ultech Engineering recently organized a successful basic PLC workshop with Siemens SIMATIC S7-1200 Controller in collaboration with the Curtin University Malaysia students and IEEE Club to provide practical training in Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs). The workshop was led by Ultech Engineering presenter Miss Wong Voon Xing and assisted by Mr Kelvin Tiong Ka Yung and Mr Mike Gaby Law Ik Pin and focused on utilizing the Siemens SIMATIC S7-1200 Controller for monitoring fish tanks or aquaculture systems on the 4th of May.

Curtin Students and IEEE Club Spark Interest in PLC Programming with Dual Session Workshop

The workshop attracted 27 enthusiastic students from the Curtin Students and IEEE Club members, eager to delve into the realm of PLC programming. Divided into two sessions, the morning session, running from 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM, accommodated 13 students from Curtin University Malaysia, while the afternoon session, from 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM, welcomed 14 students of IEEE Club. This division ensured personalized attention and optimal engagement for all participants.

Key Learning Objectives: Mastering PLC Programming Essentials with Siemens SIMATIC S7-1200 Controller

Led by our charismatic engineer Miss Wong Voon Xing and assisted by Mr. Kelvin Tiong Ka Yung and Mr. Mike Gaby Law Ik Pin, the workshop aimed to equip students with practical skills in PLC programming, focusing on the following objectives:

  1. Understanding the Siemens SIMATIC S7-1200 Controller as the PLC of choice.
The Siemens SIMATIC S7-1200 Controller is a versatile PLC widely used in industrial automation. This objective involves familiarizing participants with the hardware and software components of the S7-1200 and understanding its architecture, capabilities, and specifications. Participants will learn why the S7-1200 was chosen as the PLC for the workshop and its relevance in real-world applications.
  2. Connecting PLCs with Human-Machine Interface (HMI) systems.
HMIs are devices that allow humans to interact with machines or systems. In this objective, participants will learn how to establish communication between the PLC (in this case, the Siemens SIMATIC S7-1200) and an HMI system. They will understand the protocols and methods used to exchange data between the PLC and HMI, enabling visualization and control of the PLC's operations through a user-friendly interface.
  3. Programming PLCs to display outputs on HMIs.
Once the PLC and HMI communication is established, participants will delve into programming the PLC to send data to the HMI for display. This involves writing logic in the PLC's programming software (e.g., TIA Portal) to gather relevant information from sensors or internal memory and transmit it to the HMI. Participants will learn how to design user interfaces on the HMI to present this data effectively to operators or users.
  4. Utilizing sensors to provide input to the PLC and controlling outputs such as pumps and LEDs.
Sensors are essential components for gathering real-world data in automation systems. Participants will learn how to integrate various sensors (e.g., level sensors, temperature sensors) with the PLC (Siemens SIMATIC S7-1200) to provide input signals. They will then program the PLC to process this input data and control outputs such as pumps (for water level control in aquaculture) or LEDs (for status indication). This objective covers the entire process from sensor selection and wiring to PLC programming for control logic.

Hands-On Learning with Expert Guidance: Mastering PLC Wiring, Sensor Integration, and Logic Programming with Siemens SIMATIC S7-1200 Controller

Participants actively engaged in hands-on activities under the expert guidance of Miss Wong Voon Xing. They learned to wire PLCs, connect sensors, and program logic for monitoring fish tanks/aquaculture systems using the Siemens SIMATIC S7-1200 Controller.

Project Monitoring and Future Collaboration

Curtin students will continue to work on projects involving the monitoring of fish tanks and aquaculture systems at the university. Miss Wong Voon Xing will oversee and monitor these projects, providing valuable guidance and support. This collaboration between Ultech Engineering, the Curtin IEEE Club, and Curtin University highlights the commitment to fostering innovation and practical skills in industrial automation.

The culmination of the Basic PLC workshop marks just the beginning of an enduring collaboration between Ultech Engineering, the Curtin IEEE Club, and Curtin University. As Curtin students embark on their projects involving the monitoring of fish tanks and aquaculture systems, they will continue to benefit from the expert oversight and guidance of Wong Voon Xing. With his wealth of experience in industrial automation, Voon Xing will play a pivotal role in ensuring the success of these projects, providing ongoing support and valuable insights to the students.

In essence, the project monitoring and future collaboration between these esteemed entities symbolize a shared vision of empowering the next generation of engineers and innovators. Together, they strive to push the boundaries of possibility, driving transformative change and making significant contributions to the field of industrial automation.
