Miri City Day has been observed annually on the 20th of May ever since its establishment by the former Chief Minister, Abdul Taib Mahmud on 20th May 2005. To mark this occasion, a time capsule containing a newspaper article from that day and a commemorative book was interred at the Petroleum Science Museum on Canada Hill in Miri. This time capsule is scheduled to be unveiled a century later, on the 20th of May in 2105.

This led to the historic moment on August 10, 1910, when the first oil was struck on a hill overlooking the modest fishing village of Miri, at a depth of 123 meters. This well, later named the "Grand Old Lady," remained productive until 1972.

The Grand Old Lady is not an old woman monument but the first oil well in Miri, the first oil well in the country to use cable equipment, a 'mother' that yields valuable results to its nation's people. This landmark is approximately 30 meters tall, located on Canada Hill overlooking the city of Miri, and has successfully attracted locals to enjoy the scenery or go jogging on specially built trails. The discovery of oil in 1910 on Canada Hill is an important part of modern Miri's history. Canada Hill is where the oil industry in Sarawak began, with the successful drilling of the Miri oil well on December 1, 1910.
The newly unveiled Miri City Hall, anticipated to become an iconic landmark, was officially launched by Chief Minister YAB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg on November 15, 2021. Located at Marina Parkcity, overlooking the South China Sea, the architectural concept of the structure is inspired by an oil barrel, serving as a poignant symbol of Miri's identity and historical significance as a bustling oil hub.
