Earlier this month, the Automation & Control Engineers at Ultech Engineering attended a one-week PLC, HMI and Servo product training and setup session at Mitsubishi Electric Sales Malaysia’s HQ at Petaling Jaya, Kuala Lumpur.

The Mitsubishi Electric PLC, HMI, and Servo training session is a comprehensive program designed to provide knowledge and practical skills related to the operation, programming, and maintenance of Mitsubishi Electric programmable logic controllers (PLCs), human-machine interfaces (HMIs), and servo systems. This training session is typically organized by Mitsubishi Electric and is aimed at authorized brand distributors who sell and support Mitsubishi Electric products. Incidentally, during the course duration, new employees from MESM were also told to participate, familiarize themselves with the company's products, and gain expertise in their applications so the training conducted could be applied to internal and external engineers.

The training session consisted of several components, including theoretical lectures, hands-on exercises, and practical demonstrations. The sessions are conducted by experienced trainers with in-depth knowledge of Mitsubishi Electric products and their applications. Here is a breakdown of what each component may entail:

  1. Theoretical Lectures:
    • Introduction to Mitsubishi Electric products: The session begins with an overview of Mitsubishi Electric PLCs, HMIs, and servo systems, highlighting their features, capabilities, and applications.
    • PLC fundamentals: Participants learn about the basic principles of PLC operation, ladder logic programming, and various programming languages supported by Mitsubishi Electric PLCs, such as ladder diagram (LD), function block diagram (FBD), and structured text (ST).
    • HMI fundamentals: The theoretical lectures cover the basics of HMI design, functionality, and communication protocols used for interfacing with Mitsubishi Electric PLCs.
    • Servo systems: Participants gain an understanding of servo motor principles, motion control concepts, and the integration of servo systems with PLCs.
  2. Hands-on Exercises:
    • Programming PLCs: Participants get hands-on experience with programming Mitsubishi Electric PLCs using software like GX Works3 or GX Developer. They learn to create, edit, and troubleshoot PLC programs using different programming languages.
    • HMI configuration: Participants work with Mitsubishi Electric HMIs and learn how to create intuitive graphical interfaces, configure screens, set up alarms, and establish communication links with PLCs.
    • Servo system setup: The training session may include practical exercises on configuring servo drives, tuning servo motors, and programming motion control functions.
  3. Practical Demonstrations:
    • Application-specific demos: Trainers showcase real-world applications where Mitsubishi Electric PLCs, HMIs, and servo systems are used. Participants observe these demonstrations to understand the practical implementation of the products and their integration.
    • Troubleshooting and maintenance: The trainers provide insights into common issues that can arise with Mitsubishi Electric products and demonstrate troubleshooting techniques. They also discuss best practices for maintenance and preventive measures to ensure the longevity of the equipment.

Throughout the training session, there are opportunities for participants to ask questions, seek clarification, and engage in discussions with the trainers. The aim is to equip participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively promote, support, and utilize Mitsubishi Electric PLCs, HMIs, and servo systems.

As our team traveled all the way from Miri, Sarawak, to Kuala Lumpur for the training, the engineers had to rent an Airbnb near the training office, and their Mitsubishi counterparts were so kind to bring them around to places and explore KL. It was also an opportunity for the junior engineers to bond with their team leaders during this trip too.

At the end of the training session, our employees take this experience away as recognition of their completion, indicating their competence in working with Mitsubishi Electric products. This training helps provide our engineers with valuable knowledge to enhance their sales and support capabilities, enabling Ultech Engineering and our people to contribute effectively to the company's operations and principle of providing quality industrial automation solutions to our esteemed clients.
