PPU 300 and PPM 300 Success Stories: DEIF Powering Maritime Excellence at Ultech Engineering

This article explores the success stories of two pivotal projects — the YD420 vessel in 2016 featuring the DEIF PPU 300 and the YD987 UAE Navy ship in 2020 equipped with the DEIF PPM 300.

What is PPU 300? 

DEIF's Paralleling and Protection Unit (PPU 300) stands out as a versatile and intelligent solution, specifically crafted to address the challenges faced by the marine and offshore industry in terms of cost, space, efficiency, and reliability. Offering advanced functions for environmental sustainability, the PPU 300 enables significant cost savings in investment and maintenance. Its flexibility extends to a wide range of applications, including generator control and protection for various systems such as diesel generators, emergency diesel generators, shaft generators, battery energy storages (hybrid), shore connections, and bus tie breakers. 

The PPU 300's space-saving, flexible, and modular infrastructure is attributed to DEIF's Multi-line 300 platform, featuring different plug-in modules installed in expandable 4 or 7 slot controllers and extension racks. This system supports up to 59 I/O modules per controller, allowing for scalability from small vessels to large power plants. Additionally, the PPU 300 facilitates expansion with built-in full PLC features, including the option to integrate the CODESYS IEC 61131-3 PLC for enhanced control flexibility. 

The user-friendly operator control, featuring a 5” color graphic screen, simplifies configuration, setup, and maintenance tasks. With reduced installation, service, maintenance, and upgrade costs, the PPU 300 boasts an intelligent modular design that supports easy on-board replacement, assisted by automatic functionality recognition. 

The unique broadcast feature allows seamless replication of parameters across multiple controllers, significantly reducing installation and upgrade times. Flexible Modbus further simplifies upgrades and retrofitting, offering users the ability to customize Modbus Tables with exporting and importing capabilities. Overall, the PPU 300 ensures a greener, cost-effective, and user-friendly solution for diverse marine and offshore applications.

What is PPM 300?

DEIF's PPM 300 emerges as a versatile and intelligent generator control platform tailored for marine and offshore applications. Offering a comprehensive suite of control, protection, and supervision functions, the PPM 300 excels in managing generator systems, including diesel generators, emergency diesel generators, shaft generators, battery energy storage, shore connections, and bus tie breakers. 

This power management solution not only meets set power requirements but also ensures stable operation, incorporating market-leading fuel optimization technology and Advanced Blackout Prevention (ABP) designed specifically for Dynamic Positioning (DP) plants. As an integral part of a multi-master solution, PPM 300 controllers connect seamlessly to eliminate single point failures, with the master functionality automatically transitioning to another host in the event of unit fall-out, ensuring continuous safety and reliability. 

Constructed with market-leading quality hardware, the PPM 300 boasts the latest processor technology and long-life adaptability. Its modular design supports on-site replacement of processor, communication, measurement, and input-output modules, backed by comprehensive class approvals, facilitating fast, easy, and cost-saving service, repairs, and upgrades. The controller display unit, featuring a 5” color graphic screen, enhances user experience with intuitive sequences and icons for swift data readout, easy access to alarms handling, and simplified controller setup, all tailored to user permission levels.

The differences between PPU 300 and PPM 300

DEIF PPM 300:

The DEIF PPM 300 stands as a comprehensive generator control platform, excelling in the management of diverse generator systems essential for marine and offshore applications. Noteworthy features include its integration of market-leading fuel optimization technology and Advanced Blackout Prevention (ABP), specifically tailored for Dynamic Positioning (DP) plants. As part of a multi-master solution, the PPM 300 ensures continuous operation by seamlessly transitioning master functionality in the event of unit fall-out. Its market-leading quality hardware, coupled with a modular design, facilitates on-site module replacement, providing adaptability and ease of maintenance. The user-friendly 5” color graphic screen enhances control, offering an intuitive interface for swift data interpretation, easy access to alarms handling, and simplified controller setup.

DEIF PPU 300:

In contrast, the DEIF PPU 300 primarily serves as a versatile Paralleling and Protection Unit, specializing in power distribution within marine and offshore settings. Unique to the PPU 300 is its flexibility to be incorporated into a power management solution where the power management logic is located elsewhere, showcasing its adaptability to different system configurations. While highly flexible and configurable for power distribution, it may require an additional Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) for specific power management tasks. The PPU 300 highlights its versatility and flexibility in optimizing power distribution across various applications. As with the PPM 300, the choice between the two solutions ultimately depends on the specific needs and priorities of the intended application.
